What is metal broaching?

Broaching and metal broaching
Traditional broaching is carried out on tools to remove chips called 'broaching machines' using tools called 'broaches'. The construction of such tools requires very complex machining operations to produce teeth with increasing thickness, capable of progressively removing the chip and achieving the desired geometric profile.
Broaches work by mechanical traction and require through holes. They allow the process to be completed in one single passage, so that the broaching process is carried out in a very short time, but they are very expensive tools. This means they are only really viable in large-scale productions which can mitigate the initial cost quickly.
